2023 Spring Softball - Pre K T-Ball [LLSB2323SSPK]

Westport Little League Softball is happy to continue an introductory T Ball program for players in preschool (players must be 4 years of age). The team will meet once a week for field time, where they will be introduced to the sport and related skills in a fun, relaxed, encouraging environment. This parent coach-led program will teach players the basic concepts of throwing/catching/hitting/base running. Weekly field time will focus on teaching basic skills and game knowledge and creating/fostering a love of the sport in our youngest athletes.

Weekly T Ball field time will be Sundays 4-5pm @ Town Hall.  The spring season will begin 4/2/23 and run until approximately 6/4/23 (no session 4/9 or 5/28).

Equipment required: face shield, glove, bat, batting helmet, sneakers.

Base Cost: $150.00

Opened: 01/17/2023
Closes: 03/01/2023

2023 Spring Softball - Grades K-1 (Instructional) [LLSB2323SSK1]

This program will teach players the fundamentals and rules of the game and the importance of teamwork in a fun, relaxed, supportive environment. Drills will focus on throwing/catching /hitting (coach pitch but using a tee when necessary)/base running.

The girls will have one weekly clinic and one weekend (Saturday) game during the season (timing and location TBD).

The season will run approximately 4/2/23 – early- to mid- June (no clinics/games during spring break). Weekly clinics will be held Tuesdays 4:30-5:30pm @ Town Hall.

Equipment required: face shield, glove, bat, batting helmet, sneakers.

Base Cost: $340.00

Opened: 01/17/2023

2023 Spring Softball - Grades 2-3 (AA) [LLSB2323SS23]

This program will continue to build upon player skills and see players continue their advancement in throwing/catching/hitting (live pitch)/base running and game knowledge.

Player pitching/catching will be incorporated (working from a 35’ mound), with coach relief, allowing girls the opportunity to begin to try the positions and acquire skills/training/reps needed to play there. Girls will learn each infield/outfield position and engage in skills work at those positions. Coaches (and potentially youth umpires) will call games and a 3-out inning will be implemented.

The girls will have one weekly clinic and one weekend game during the season. Coaches may also run an additional, optional, practice for those seeking more field time. The concepts of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship will be interwoven with all activities.

The season will run approximately 4/2/23 – early- to mid- June (no clinics/games during spring break). Weekly clinics will be held Mondays 4:30 – 5:30pm @ Town Hall. Games will be played on Saturdays (timing and location TBD).

Equipment required: face shield, glove, bat, batting helmet, cleats, softball pants.

Additional planning note: At the conclusion of the spring Little League season, there is usually an opportunity for players to participate in a Westport team as part of “All-Star” 8U (for players born in 2014 with some exceptions for kids born in 2015) and 9U (for players born in 2013 with some exceptions for kids born in 2014) tournaments.

The 8U tournament is kid pitch with coach relief (hosted by Trumbull); 9U is typically kid pitch (has been hosted by Trumbull/Fairfield). Coaches for these teams are parent volunteers and they are responsible for running the team practices as well as attending games. Practices begin once the regular Little League season ends and the tournaments historically take place at the very end of June (last year the 8U tournament took place June 24-30 and the 9U tournament took place roughly June 22-30). Details specific to this year’s 8U and 9U tournaments will be made available as soon as we have them but please note we do not generally receive specific details until well after the spring season is underway.

We realize it’s *very* early and specific details aren’t available for a while, but as many are beginning their summer plans, we wanted to flag this for planning purposes in case your player may like to try and participate.

2023 Spring Softball - Grades 4-5 (AAA) [LLSB2323SS45]

This program will build player skills and knowledge and incorporate further structure and clear expectations of players as they advance in their understanding of the game and related skills.

Advanced drills in throwing/catching/hitting/base running and situational drills will become a priority (teaching players what to do when XX happens on the field and working with them to understand each play and be able to turn plays quickly).  Players will pitch (from a 35’ mound, full windup only)/catch, with limited/no coach relief this spring. Players will rotate through the infield/outfield and begin homing in on positions. Base running and bunting/stealing/sliding will be taught.

The girls will have one weekly clinic and two weekly games during the season. Coaches may also run an additional, optional, practice for those seeking more field time. Games will be called by umpires and played against other towns as well as between Westport teams. The concepts of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship will be interwoven with all activities.

The season will run approximately 4/2/23 – early- to mid- June. Weekly clinics will be held on Wednesdays 5-6:30pm @ Town Hall. There will be one Saturday game and one weekday game, timing TBD.

Equipment required: face shield, glove, bat, batting helmet, cleats, softball pants.

Additional planning note: At the conclusion of the spring Little League season, there is usually an opportunity for players to participate in a Westport team as part of “All-Star” 9U (for players born in 2013 with some exceptions for kids born in 2014), 10U District (for players born in 2012 with some exceptions), and 12U District (for players born in 2010/11) tournaments.

The 9U tournament is typically kid pitch (and has been hosted by Trumbull/Fairfield). Coaches are parent volunteers and they are responsible for running the team practices as well as attending games. Practices begin once the regular Little League season ends and the tournament historically takes place at the very end of June (last year the 9U tournament took place roughly June 22-30). Details on this year’s 9U tournament will be made available as soon as we have them but please note we do not generally receive specific details until well after the spring season is underway.

The 10U/12U District teams play other District teams in CT in tournaments that run end-of-June/early- to- mid July, with a chance to ultimately play in the State championship and beyond (the better you play, the longer you play). More specific details on opportunities for 10U/12U District play this year will be made available as soon as possible but please note we do not generally receive specific details until well after the spring season is underway.

2023 Spring Softball - Youth Umpires [LLSB2323SSUMP]

Registration for youth umpiring in girls softball.

All games with youth umpires would be at the AA division of play (grades 2/3). The spring Little League season is expected to run early April to early to mid June with games on Saturdays (timing and location TBD. For reference, past spring seasons have played games in town at 1pm or 11am).

Note: You must be in grades 8 -12 to register for youth umpiring.

All Little League Softball Youth Umpires must register to be eligible for game assignments.

Youth umpires will be paid $30 for the plate and $20 for the bases (if one is assigned); $50 if there is only one ump.

Prospective youth umps must provide cell and cell provider information so we can communicate effectively.  Umps may accept or decline an assignment without penalty but must respond promptly to assignment notifications. No shows or cancellations without 24 hours of notice (without a legitimate reason) will be immediately dropped from the program.

Registration and attendance at a youth umpire training clinic will entitle you to one assignment. Beyond that all assignments are merit based on coach reviews. Knowledge and understanding of the rules of the game, as well as the ability to remain firm in your calls, make for excellent umpires.  While we expect all coaches, players and spectators to act appropriately and be respectful, there are occasional issues - if you experience any bad behavior, please reach out to Keri Stedman (kpaciencia@hotmail.com) or Elise Gabriele (ebg33@mac.com).

There is no charge for registration. If anyone in your family has already registered for softball (or baseball) please use your family account to log-in which uses a parent email as username. You can then add another family member if necessary. Anyone newly registering who is under 18 years old must be registered via an account created by their parent/guardian.
